AGPAL & QIP — Cultural Awareness and Cultural Safety

AGPAL is a leading not-for-profit organisation, providing general practice accreditation and quality improvement services within Australia. AGPAL are dedicated to servicing and supporting general practices, Aboriginal Medical Services, medical deputising services, after hours services, and Royal Flying Doctor Services (RFDS) throughout their accreditation and quality improvement journeys.

The Challenge

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is committed to improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The RACGP recognised that the medical profession had a key role to play in improving the quality of health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It made a commitment to raising general practitioner awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health needs and their cultural context, and to advocating for culturally appropriate health delivery systems that improve health outcomes. Endorsement by the RACGP for cultural safety education activities is assessed by extremely rigorous standards.
AGPAL & QIP aimed to support their clients to achieve a high level of cultural competence, and how to apply it in practice. They also recognized the importance of ensuring their staff and on-site assessors were adept at implementing culturally safety.

The Solution

A multi-modal program was designed to provide various opportunities to consider, practice and interact with the learning content and support people.
An on-demand video library, webinars, individual and team-based activities, an eLearning program was designed with interactive elements to allow learners to test their unconscious biases, and pre and post learning cultural awareness. Before diving into content, learners were asked to reflect on their feelings and live experiences to begin the process of empathising with colleagues, clients or patients.
